The number of crimes in the central area and the country as a whole for every 10.000 people. The graph shows that the level of criminal activity is lower in the central area than in the whole country.
When studying the photo and the data, it is worth keeping in mind that the number of special penal code infractions and traffic violations can partly depend on the police initiative in the area.
This graph shows the number of full-time equivalent units in law enforcement in the monitoring area, Akureyri, Húsavík, and Þórshöfn. Jobs in law enforcement grew in number in the monitored area in 2016-2019. Between years 2021 and 2022, the number of jobs at the police station in Húsavík grew by one as a prevention officer was hired to the office. In 2021, the number of jobs in Akureyri increased due to the closure of the prison, and in 2022, the number of jobs in Akureyri increased even further due to the shortening of the working week.
At the beginning of 2024, the number of jobs in Akureyri have increased by 4, Húsavík and Þórshöfn have decreased by one in each place.
The quality of life for the population in a community where the level of criminal activity is low is higher than in a community where criminal activity is high. Increased population because of industrial growth, structuring of power plants and increased tourism has diverse influence on the community and it is therefore important that the infrastructure of that community is strong. An index monitoring the development of the level of criminal activity and number of jobs in law enforcement can give information on the long term stability in the area.
This index will publish information on number of crimes for every 10.000 people and the number of jobs in law enforcement.
Data showing the development of the level of criminal activity and number of jobs in law enforcement will be published yearly. Data should be published no later than 15th of February each year.
Data from the central area and the country as a whole will be compared.
The project manager is responsible for acquiring the data and publishing it according to the publishing schedule.
Data will be collected from the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police.
