New update of drinking water data
The Public Health Authority in North East Iceland carries out annual measurements of drinking water in Húsavík, Laugar and in Reykjahlíð. The results of the measurements are published on Gaumur's website, index 2.4.
The total number of bacteria is monitored as well as conductivity and acidity in the water. Standards for bacterial counts are 100/ml for the total number of bacteria, 0/100 ml for coliforms and 0/100 ml for e. coli compared to 22°C warm water.
If the results of the analysis of the samples of The Public Health Authority in North East Iceland exceed the maximum value, the health committee shall investigate the case to identify the cause and assess the risk to human health. Bacteria, coliforms and e. coliforms are classified as C class. If the above-mentioned bacteria are detected above thresholds, the health committee, in consultation with The Environment Agency of Iceland must assess whether there is a risk to human health according to what is stipulated in Article 14. regulations on drinking water. The Health Committee must take action to restore the water quality, as well as notify consumers of the actions, unless deviations are insignificant. Actions may include, for example, requiring consumers to boil drinking water while the quality of drinking water is restored.
The water's conductivity and acidity are also monitored. Conductivity must not exceed 2500 μS cm-1 at 20°C. The water must not be corrosive and the acidity must be between 6.5 and 9.5 pH.
Measurements of bacterial counts are, as in previous years, below the limit, whether total bacterial counts, coliforms or e. coliforms. Conductivity also measures below standards. The acidity is between 7.3 and up to 8.33 and therefore also within the acceptable limits.
