Pig farming has now been ceased in the area monitored by the Sustainability Project

Since the Sustainability Project started monitoring number of farms at the monitoring area, pigs have been under 200 and 1-2 farms have been breeding pigs. Pig farming has now been ceased in the Sustainability Project monitoring area. The two pig farms were located in Þingeyjarsveit, but no pigs have been reared in other areas in the sphere of influence that is monitored in the Sustainability Prjoect. The evolution of other farms with livestock is similar, although they are not currently ceasing.

If numbers of cattle farms are examined, they were 74 in 2012 but now they are 60. The number of sheep farms was 234 in 2012 but is now 174, which is a decrease of 25%. Horse farms were 105 in 2016, but in 2018 they are 85. Fur farms have been few during the monitoring period. The first years there were no fur farms in the monitoring area, but now one farm is operating. The number of poultry has decreased as in other species. Farms with poultry were 32 in 2011, but the only 17 in 2018.
