Shipments decreased in Húsavík harbor

Now indicator 1.7 c. Maritime transport, transport and cruise ships has been updated for 2019.

The number of cargo ships docked at Húsavík harbor were 65 in 2019. The previous year they were 64. In 2017, when most cargo ships docked at Húsavík harbor they were 72. The number of cruise ships arriving in Húsavík harbor were 29 in 2019. In comparison, they were 41 in 2018 and had never been more numerous in Gaumur´s monitoring period.

It is very interesting to look at the development of shipping vessels during Gaumur´s monitoring period. In the years 2011-2014, which is the time before the construction at the Theistareykir geothermal power plant and the industrial development at PCC BakkiSilicon began, only 3-4 cargo ships had a stopover in Húsavík harbor every year and 2-7 cruise ships. Activities at Húsavík harbor have therefore gone from being a total of only 5 cargo and cruise ships a year to being at most 105 ships, or 21 times more than at the beginning of the monitoring period.
