The population in the Central Area is increasing

The population of Húsavík is increasing year by year. the population was 2,433 at the beginning of 2022, but 2,508 at the beginning of 2023 and has not been as many since 1996 when the population was 2,511.
Between the years 2022 and 2023, the population of Miðvæði increased from 3,956 to 4,093 or about 3.5%. The increase in Norðurþing in Miðvæði amounts to 3.6%, the increase in Þingeyjarsveit amounts to 3.2%, while in Tjörneshreppi the number decreases by 1.6% or 1 population. During Gaumur's monitoring period, the population of Miðvæði has only once been more than it is now. It was the year 2018, which was the peak year for construction on Þeistareyk and Bakki and the first year of operation at PCC BakkiSilicon.

When the relative development of the population is compared to all of Iceland, the Western Region and the Eastern Region, it can be seen that the increase in the Central Region is proportionally the greatest. The relative increase in Iceland is 3.06%, in the Western Area it is 1.66%, in the Eastern Area 1.09% and in the Central Area the increase is 3.62%.

If the index of population development is examined, the population index for the whole country has reached 121.76 since the beginning of Gaum's monitoring period. In the Eastern region, it has decreased and reached a low of 89.87 in 2020, but has been increasing since then and is now 93.5. In the western region, the number of visitors is 112.72. In the past, the region kept up with the development at the national level, but the region and the country as a whole have fallen apart in terms of population development since 2015. The development in the Central Region stands out in that the index decreased from 2011 to 2016, when it was 99.11, but then it started to rise and became 114.07 in 2018, which was then higher than in the whole country. The index dropped to 105.14 in 2021 and has risen since then to 110.09 in 2023.
